How to adapt the script to take into account the necessary intonation?

One of Ted Talks most famous speeches, by Julian Treasure, tells us about a world in which we create and consume sound. This world, in which we appropriate sound in a conscious way in different environments.

Sound is, without any doubt, a fundamental component of the speech. And that is why, for example, when doing quality videos for digital promotion, the author of the speech uses specific tools such as:

  • Microphone;

  • Sound transmitters;

  • Sound receivers;

  • Audio recorders;

There are several aspects about sound that we should consider:

  • Volume;

  • Speed;

  • Timber;

  • Tone;

  • Rhythm.

The use of devices allows the sound to have more quality such as greater range and less noise.

The script that we elaborate for our speech, whether on video or in front of an audience, needs to take into account the variation of the sound that we will use strategically.

The same way that in an academic thesis I do an analysis of the patterns that identify the main themes of my interviews, we should also analyze the variations that characterize the different parts of our message.

How to introduce variations within the speech?

There are three essential aspects that need to be followed for those variations to be introduced and to accomplish our purpose. Lets then do the planning of the variation focusing in highlighting individual parts:

  • of the full text;

  • of the paragraph;

  • of the question;

In regards to the full text, the first thing to do is to select a few sentences. Two, three or more depending on the content and extension of the speech. Those sentences should be the ones that have more meaning to our speech and that absolutely defend and reflect our purpose. After being chosen, we should highlight them with a color and underline them in order to know that, for the specific moment within that sentence we will need to elevate our tone of voice in order to guarantee more impact and variations of our message.

After that, we should find in each paragraph a word that is really important and underline it with another color. We can here moderate, for example, the speed so that the audience can feel more those specific words.

By emphasizing with colour we will highlight the points where we want to give more emphasis.

Each question that is made throughout the speech should also be underlined with another color. Here, we can also alternate the intonation to guarantee more emphasis, more impact in the speech.

The surprise moment of the speech, which refers to our big revelation, can be marked for example with a specific black dot next to the line.

While, in case we use humor, a very strong message support, we can then insert three dots under the sequence where that specific part is located.

All these notes they will help you:

  • to guide the intonation of the speech;

  • to facilitate the oral fluidity;

  • to reinforce our confidence – helping in the scope of non verbal communication.

It is important to remember that, when we produce a certain video for promotional reasons, whether at home or in a studio, contrarily to public events prepared for that matter, we may not dispose of necessary tools to record the sound effectively.

We can affirm that a video with bad sound quality is as negative as an inadequate title, as previously analyzed. Both when we provide bad titles, as well as when we produce a video with bad sound quality, we are harming our performance as a whole, because whoever is on the other side will definitely lose focus on our speech, the interest in our offer and consequently we will be discredited.
