The passion economy has created a disruption in the work market. Today, we have the possibility to expose our talents in the new digital reality in which we live in, so that we can create an audience, and monetize with that same audience.
Although the job market may not allow us to make our talents into a full-time job, the ability to create and disseminate content relevant to niche markets is a way of gaining status in our area of passion, as well as some return on investment by effort and dedication in creating relevant content.
Today, we have at our disposal several digital tools that allow us to create content and monetize by sharing our content. We can think of examples such as SendOwl, Selify, SamCart or Gumroad. The goal is simple: to create material that may be relevant to an audience, considering this material is associated with an area of our interest.
But, to be effective in the passion economy, there is a primary need for communication. This should follow some steps.
- • First, we must be consistent in our communication. If we promote our talent in digital, consistency is the key to success. A single video, a single course or other material to promote our work in order to attract an audience is not enough and it is quickly forgotten.
- • Of course, taking into account consistency, we have to consider the planning of that same communication. Professionalism in any new passion economy adventure requires prior preparation, which allows the materials to be properly pre-established, so that we can guarantee many months of continuous work. A new work challenge within the passion economy framework has a strong emotional component, which is the love for what we are developing. It has, in fact, great meaning for us, but it is, nevertheless, still a challenge.
- • And finally, the communication of a passion economy project must be human. The key factor related to the promotion that we make of our talents is ourselves. The audience is concerned not only with the talents of others, but also by who presents those talents, and how they present them. Communicating in a human way means humility. It means sensitivity to explain content in a logical way, involving the audience through the effective use of storytelling.
Through these communication tools, in addition to the continuous development of technical skills in our areas of passion, we can start a new professional path, and with that we can leave the traditional work structure, the “nine to five”. This structure, the “nine-to-five”, often has a negative connotation associated with a job that is carried out to guarantee us a monthly salary, in a job with which we often do not identify with.
The passion economy requires leaving the comfort zone. If a nine to five job can have a negative connotation for many of us, because we are disconnected from our professional passions, a nine to five job is also a comfort zone. The passion economy requires more from us, and in order to be successful, the work structure may for a long time be “nine to midnight”.
But the reward is in achieving our success, for which we have a multitude of digital tools today at our disposal. And then this effort, which is coupled with a passion, can, over time, allow for our passion to be our only job, thus disconnected from any other professional commitments. Ultimately, this contributes to our happiness.
